Wednesday's game between Auburn and Alabama has been postponed until Thursday due to winter weather, Auburn announced Tuesday.
The decision was made after consulting with the Southeastern Conference for the safety of the teams, staff and fans, the school said in a statement.
Tipoff will be about 25 minutes after the conclusion of the Texas A&M-Auburn women's game, which will begin at 5 p.m. ET.Weather also affected the North Carolina men's basketball team, which was supposed to fly to the Atlanta area but instead needed to take airport vans to a MARTA station after its team bus was stuck for five hours on the interstate. They are scheduled to play Georgia Tech on Wednesday.
The rare Southern winter storm dropped more than 3 inches of snow in some areas of north Georgia, while 2.3 inches were recorded at Hartsfield Jackson International Airport, said National Weather Service meteorologist Ryan Willis. While such amounts barely qualify as a storm in the north, it was enough to paralyze the Deep South.
On Tuesday, LSU (13-6, 4-3 SEC) led wire-to-wire in an 87-82 upset of No. 11 Kentucky in front an estimated 6,000-plus fans who made it to the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge despite unusual winter weather that coated roads with ice. The arena's capacity is just over 13,000.
The governors of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi declared states of emergency in the wake of the storm.
