Tennessee-Martin fired Jason James on Monday after five seasons.
James took over as the Skyhawks' coach in June 2009 after spending seven seasons as an assistant to former coach Bret Campbell.
Athletic director Julio Freire said that "this was a tough decision to make" in a university release announcing the decision.
UT-Martin was 8-23 this season, 3-13 in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Skyhawks did not quality for the league tournament.
Freire says James "conducted the program with the highest degree of integrity" but that he felt it was time to move in a new direction after taking a "hard look" at how the team had developed over the past five years.
James finished with a 37-117 overall record at UT-Martin.
