Steve Fisher back next season

Steve Fisher will return next season to coach San Diego State, he told UT-San Diego.

Fisher, who turns 69 years old next week, will be entering the final year of his contract next season.

"I've always wanted to go at least to the end of my contract," Fisher told UT-San Diego. "(Wife) Angie and I talked about it, and she was a bit ambivalent -- that it would be nice not to have the pressure of the job. But she knows that I want to come back, that I like doing it, that I like coming to practice, and she said, 'I'm all for it.'

"If she had said, 'I don't want you to come back,' I wouldn't have come back."

Fisher has made the Aztecs' program relevant since taking the job in 1999, leading the school to seven NCAA tournament appearances and 10 20-win seasons, including a 29-4 mark this season. The No. 4 seed in the West for the NCAA tournament this season, San Diego State faces New Mexico State on Thursday.

Fisher may be best known for taking over Michigan just prior to the 1989 NCAA tournament after Bill Frieder was fired and guiding the Wolverines to an improbable national championship.
