ESPN.com news services

Jim Rutherford is expected to resign as general manager of the Carolina Hurricanes at the end of the season, according to a report by the Raleigh News & Observer.

The News & Observer, citing sources close to the team, reports that Rutherford could remain with the team as president.

Rutherford, 65, has been with the team since 1994, when it was still the Hartford Whalers. He did not comment on the report when contacted by the News & Observer on Monday.

Former Hurricanes standout and current vice president of hockey operations Ron Francis is expected to take over as GM when Rutherford steps down, according to the report.
