Move over, military personnel -- you're no longer the only heroes being saluted on sports uniforms.
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs, a Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, will hold a "Heroes Night" promotion on April 26, and the IronPigs and the Pawtucket Red Sox will get in the spirit by wearing police- and firefighter-themed jerseys.
The use of specialized jerseys to salute heroism is nothing new, but until now most gestures of this type have honored the military via the use of camouflage jerseys.
The jersey designs also play into the familiar minor league trope of wacky theme concepts, complete with a faux necktie for the IronPigs' police jersey and faux metal clips for the PawSox's firefighter jersey.
The jerseys will be auctioned off during the game, with proceeds benefiting assorted local charities.
