NEW YORK -- Carlos Beltran exited Monday night's New York Yankees-New York Mets game after hyperextending his right elbow working in the indoor batting cage between his at-bats, according to manager Joe Girardi.

Beltran went for an MRI on Monday night. The Yankees said the results were not immediately available.

"I'm concerned because it was enough for him to take himself out of the game," Girardi said after the Yankees' 9-7 loss to the Mets.

Girardi described Beltran as "upset," when he told his manager that he needed to be removed from the game. In the seventh, backup catcher John Ryan Murphy pinch hit for Beltran. Beltran had been the DH so it is not unusual to take swings between at-bats.

Beltran was unavailable for comment. He went 0-for-3 Monday and is hitting .234 on the season.

The Yankees (19-18) are beginning to witness a repeat of 2013 in which injuries ravaged their season. Mark Teixeira did not start Monday because of fatigue and a tight groin.

Teixeira did have a pinch-hit single in the ninth and vowed to start on Tuesday.

Ichiro Suzuki was unavailable on Monday due to a back injury. Girardi said Ichiro is day-to-day.

Reliever Shawn Kelley is out with a back injury and hasn't pitched in a week. Kelley thought he was recovered when he warmed up to enter Sunday's game in Milwaukee. Girardi said there were no new tests planned for Kelley

The Yankees have three-fifths of their Opening Day starting rotation on the disabled list. CC Sabathia -- who has an inflamed right knee -- is going to see Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion. Michael Pineda -- out with an upper back strain -- is playing catch, but won't return until next month at the earliest. Ivan Nova is finished for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

"You just have to find a way," Girardi said. "People have to step up. Texy did a good job. Obviously, you could see that he wasn't running at full speed tonight. We'll wait to see what we've got on Beltran and we'll go from there."
