Coach Dana Holgorsen announced Tuesday that senior Clint Trickett will be his starting quarterback when West Virginia opens the season against Alabama.

"Clint is 100 percent healthy and is ready to play," Holgorsen said in a statement. "He worked hard last season and showed a lot of ability and leadership and deserves the chance to lead the team as a senior. He will be our starter."

Trickett transferred in from Florida State last spring after it became apparent that Jameis Winston had an edge in the competition there. After sitting on the bench the first four games, Trickett finally got the start and led the Mountaineers to an upset win over then-No. 11 Oklahoma State. He went on to throw for 1,605 yards and seven touchdowns with seven interceptions.

Trickett spent this spring recovering from shoulder surgery, which allowed Paul Millard, Skyler Howard and Logan Moore to all compete for the job. But none was impressive enough to unseat Trickett from the top of the depth chart. The Mountaineers open with Alabama on Aug. 30 for the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
