Arizona Cardinals defensive back Tyrann Mathieu, who tore his ACL and LCL last December, will come off the PUP list Tuesday, and there is now optimism he will play in Arizona's regular-season opener, a league source said.

The surprise is how far along Mathieu is. Most believed he would miss the first three games of the season, then return after the Cardinals Week 4 bye.
But he has made such a dramatic return that his timetable has been accelerated, and the Cardinals are hoping he'll be ready for their Monday night game on Sept. 8 against the visiting San Diego Chargers.
Arizona could have activated Mathieu even sooner, but it felt the most prudent course of action was to wait until now, the source said.
Mathieu finished last season with 68 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble and two interceptions.
