Player dies four days after breaking neck
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- A high school football player died
Monday at Arkansas Children's Hospital, four days after breaking
Anthony Brown, 16, was hurt Thursday night during Malvern's game
at Arkadelphia. He walked off the field with help from his
teammates and was taken to Children's Hospital.
"He had been on life support before his death," county coroner
Mark Malcolm said. "After arriving at Children's, he suffered
three separate strokes."
Brown was injured on the same night that Malvern coach David
Alpe announced that he was retiring.
"The doctor told me that he had suffered a neck injury and had
a stroke when he arrived at Children's Hospital," Alpe said. "He
had feeling in his arms and legs when he left the field. Then they
said he had a stroke on Friday morning and went into a coma."
Brown, a junior running back, was injured while carrying the
ball in a 21-14 loss.
"Anthony was a fine, intelligent young man," Alpe said. "He
always had a smile on his face. He was one of the hardest working
players that we have. It's such a shame. His accident was so
