Bonds alone in fifth after career homer No. 584

DENVER -- Barry Bonds hit his 584th home run Saturday to pass Mark McGwire for sole possession of fifth place on the career list.

Bonds connected on a first-pitch fastball from Colorado Rockies starter Denny Neagle in the fourth inning, driving it into the left-center seats for his 17th homer of the season. The San Francisco slugger trails Frank Robinson by two homers for fourth place.

Bonds, who grounded out in his first at-bat, has seven career home runs against Neagle.
