Rutherford beats out two underclassmen at QB

Associated Press

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh coach Walt Harris made it official: Rod Rutherford is his starting quarterback.

Rutherford, a redshirt junior from Perry Traditional Academy in Pittsburgh, beat out sophomore Pat Hoderny and freshmen Luke Getsy and Tyler Palko.

Rutherford has never started a college game, but that will change at Heinz Field on Aug. 31 against Ohio University.

Known more for his running than passing, Rutherford has completed just 19 of 62 passes for 262 yards in college. He's thrown just one touchdown pass against four interceptions.

But Harris says Rutherford has earned the start. The coach was especially impressed with an intrasquad scrimmage Saturday, when Rutherford went 7-for-9 for 103 yards.
