Barnes won title with Boston, Olympic gold
LITTLE ROCK -- Jim Barnes, an Arkansas native who went on to
play in the Olympic Games and in the NBA, has died.
Barnes, 61, died Sept. 14 at a hospital in Silver Springs, Md.
He had had heart attacks and strokes in the past.
Barnes, a native of Tuckerman, Ark., was the top overall pick in
the 1964 National Basketball Association draft.
He played on the 1968-69 NBA champion Boston Celtics team, which
defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in seven games.
Barnes also earned All-America honors in 1964 while playing for
Texas Western, now Texas-El Paso, and made the Olympic team, which
went 9-0 and won a gold medal.
Barnes was chosen by the New York Knicks in the draft, and also
