Mercury fail to make Gillom a qualifying offer

LOS ANGELES -- Jennifer Gillom, the second-leading scorer in the Women's National Basketball Association's six-season history, was signed Thursday as a free agent by the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Sparks.

Her previous team, the Phoenix Mercury, failed to make a qualifying offer.

A 6-foot-3 forward and center, Gillom has averaged 15.3 points and 5.0 rebounds a game in her six-season WNBA career, all with Phoenix.

Her 2,793 points are second-most in WNBA history, trailing only new teammate Lisa Leslie, who has 3,193.

The 38-year old Gillom became the second player to move from one team to another under free agency rights granted to players under the league's new collective bargaining agreement reached last week. Guard Korie Hlede signed with the Detroit Shock earlier Thursday after playing with the New York Liberty in 2002.
