Izzo to lead U.S. team at Pan Am Games

Associated Press

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Michigan State's Tom Izzo was selected Thursday to coach the U.S. men's basketball team in the Pan American Games in August.

Washington coach Lorenzo Romar and Missouri coach Quin Snyder will be assistants on the team.

The Pan Am Games, held every four years in the year before the Olympics, will be in the Dominican Republic. The basketball competition is scheduled for Aug. 2-6.

Izzo was an assistant under Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders at the 2001 Goodwill Games, in which the United States won the gold medal.

In eight seasons at Michigan State, Izzo has led the Spartans to one national championship, four regular-season Big Ten titles and three Final Four appearances.

USA Basketball will hold team trials May 30-June 1 in Colorado Springs to select finalists for the team that will play in the Pan Am Games.
