Harris, three others file for free agency

NEW YORK - All-time pinch hit leader Lenny Harris of the world champion Florida Marlins was among a group of four players who filed for free agency Wednesday.

Harris, 37, started the 2003 season with the Chicago Cubs before being released on August 2. Six days later, he signed a minor-league deal with the Marlins and played in 13 games, going 4-for-14.

A 15-year veteran, Harris has 180 career pinch hits. The infielder was 1-for-4 with a walk in the postseason and did not see action in the World Series.

Also filing for free agency were Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Franco, Seattle Mariners outfielder John Mabry and St. Louis Cardinals righthander Mike DeJean.

DeJean elected free agency pending the resolution of the club option provision in the uniform player contract. His free agency could be rescinded.

Since the free agency filing period began October 26, 201 players have filed.
