Hearing for Nelson, Garcia delayed
BOSTON -- A hearing to determine whether New York Yankees
Jeff Nelson and Karim Garcia will face charges for a bullpen fight
with a Boston Red Sox employee was postponed Friday and rescheduled
for Dec. 12.
Boston police have said Nelson and Garcia assaulted part-time
Fenway Park groundskeeper Paul Williams during the ninth inning of
New York's 4-3 win in Game 3 of the AL championship series Oct. 11.
The players said Williams provoked them by cheering for the Red
Sox in the Yankees' bullpen.
Williams, 24, of Derry, N.H., was treated at a hospital and
released wearing a neck brace. The fight followed a bench-clearing
melee in the game.
The probable cause hearing is to determine whether Nelson and
Garcia should be charged with assault and battery. Garcia's lawyer
requested more time to prepare.
