Super Bowl XXXVIII: Proposition Bets

By Brandon Funston

I'm talking to Jay Kornegay, sports book director for the Imperial Palace. The topic is proposition bets for Super Bowl XXXVIII. Somewhere in the middle of the conversation, this classic Seinfeld scene plays out in my head.

(Kramer and a man sitting in an airport)
Kramer: Hey, how you doin'?
Earl: Pretty good.
Kramer: Name's Kramer.
Earl: Earl Hafler, nice to meet you. I'm headed to Houston, where you headed?
Kramer: Oh I'm happy right here. Isn't this place amazing? Planes flying in from all corners of the world, and they know the minute they're arriving.
Earl: Ah they don't know a darn thing. That's why my flight to Houston's been delayed. They're all morons. Matter of fact, I'll bet you that that flight to Pittsburgh takes off before my flight to Houston.
Kramer: Bet? Um, not betting.
Earl: Friendly wager.
Kramer: I haven't made a bet in three years, I-
Earl: Ah c'mon. Keep things interesting, pass the time.
Kramer: Okay, how much?
Earl: How 'bout \$200?
Kramer: You're on, cowboy!

You see, Kornegay's Imperial Palace casino in Las Vegas claims to offer more prop bets for the Big Game than anyone else. With more than 190 different angles to wager, some available propositions start to look as silly as betting on on-time flight arrivals.

For instance, if your specialty is football in any form, you may be interested in this IP proposition:

Who will have more: Arsenal + Manchester City goals +1/2 (-130) or Patriots touchdowns -1/2 (even).

My cube mate thinks this particular wager is fairly even. He is, unquestionably, much more in the know on English Premier nuances than myself. By my way of thinking -- which factors in the fact that the average goals scored by the two English Premier teams combined is slightly more than three -- my money would have to ride on the soccer side. But, again, I don't my Thierry Henry from my Nicolas Anelka.

• Who will have more: Muhsin Muhammad (Car) receiving yards +17 ½ (-115) or Phil Mickelson 4th round score (Phx. Open) -17 ½ (-115)

There is only one thing you need to know here. In major events, don't bet on Mickelson.

In my opinion, the IP's most random proposition would have to be this one:

Who will have more: Marques Green (St. Bony's) points -8 ½ (-115) or Troy Brown (NE) longest reception +8 ½ (-115)

It leaves me to wonder exactly what demographic the casino is shooting for. I mean, how many people really have a bettor's knowledge of St. Bonaventure men's college hoops? As for Green, he seems a volatile sort. He has a single-game high of 43 points, and a low of nine points. I'd sooner hazard a guess on who will win the coin flip which, I might add, is a nice diversion for those who like to throw the ocassional coin on red or black at the roulette table. I have it on good authority that this is one of the more popular Super Bowl bets, for whatever reason.

Anyway, you get the idea. There is literally an angle to play for everyone. Here's a look at the Imperial Palace's list -- and if you read through the entire thing, it is safe to assume you have a gambling problem:
