Official's plea met with $1,500 contribution

Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS -- The NBA has contributed $1,500 to help support the annual Indiana-Kentucky high school All-Star basketball series.

Indiana game director Pat Aikman of the sponsoring Indianapolis Star, who wrote NBA commissioner David Stern in December, received a letter and check from the league Tuesday.

"Perhaps this seems like an unusual request, but it does offer the advantage of supporting both a long and honorable charitable tradition and cherished basketball tradition in the state of Indiana," Aikman said in his request to Stern.

Aikman called the NBA donation "a dramatic and creative way to recognize the importance of basketball in Indiana."

The series involving the best high school seniors from the bordering states has been played since 1939.
