DETROIT -- Detroiters haven't seen Steve Yzerman on the ice this season because of the NHL lockout.

Now they can't even look at him on the side of a downtown building.

The 170-foot-by-100-foot wall mural of the Detroit Red Wings captain was painted over by Wednesday with white paint after gracing the Cadillac Tower building for two years.

A Red Wings sponsor purchased the rights to advertise on the wall and wanted the mural to serve as a tribute to Yzerman and Detroit's hockey fans. A spokeswoman said Wednesday that the company decided against renewing its rights to advertise there.

"We've had a wonderful relationship with Steve Yzerman," Roni Singleton said. "We evaluate it every year, and we've decided to move forward. The mural was not intended to be permanent, and we decided not to renew it."
