Jordan, Manning head celeb golf event
STATELINE, Nev. -- Comedian Ray Romano and actors Kurt
Russell and Mark Wahlberg are among those who will make their debut
this summer at the annual celebrity golf tournament at Lake Tahoe,
sponsors said Thursday.
The 16th annual American Century Championship is scheduled July
15-17 at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.
Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Donald Trump, Peyton Manning,
Pete Sampras and John Elway are among those who plan return
appearances in the three-day event with a $500,000 purse.
Other first-timers include NFL first-round draft pick and former
California quarterback Aaron Rodgers, 2004 NFL rookie of the year
Ben Roethlisberger, running back Jerome Bettis, quarterback Rich
Gannon, boxer Arturo Gatti and Danielle Aimee, winner of The Golf
Channel's "Big Break III: Ladies Only."
Former NHL star Dan Quinn, who has won the tourney four times,
will be back to defend his title along with six-time champion Rick
Rhoden. Other past champions in the field are Mario Lemieux, Billy
Joe Tolliver, Al Del Greco and Mark Rypien.
Other past and present NFL players include Troy Aikman, Marcus
Allen, Kyle Boller, Derrick Brooks, Tommy Maddox, Keenan McCardell,
Ahmad Rashad, Michael Strahan, Sterling Sharp, Emmitt Smith, Jim
McMahon, Steve Spurrier, Joe Theismann, Brian Urlacher, Hines Ward
and Jesse Palmer.
Ray Allen, Jason Kidd and Chris Webber are among the NBA stars
making return appearances.
Entertainers in the field include Carson Daly, Kevin Nealon, Don
Cheadle, Maury Povich and John O'Hurley.
Former Vice President Dan Quayle, tennis star Ivan Lendl,
hockeys Jeremy Roenick, world champion Skier Bode Miller, Olympic
gold medalist Dan Jansen also intend to play along with 1980 U.S.
hockey team captain Mike Eruzione and pro freestyle BMX rider Dave
