Dodgers sign 1B Saenz, offer arbitration to RHP Weaver

SportsTicker

DALLAS - The Los Angeles Dodgers signed valuable utility man Olmedo Saenz to a two-year contract Wednesday, thus avoiding arbitration.

No financial terms were disclosed.

Saenz hit .263 with 15 homers and 63 RBIs in 109 games for the Dodgers this past season, splitting time at first and third base. The 35-year-old has a career .265 average with 58 homers in 538 games over seven seasons.

Los Angeles also offered salary arbitration to Jeff Weaver, keeping open the window for the righthander to return to the club. He now has until December 19 to accept. If he rejects, the Dodgers can still negotiate with the 29-year-old until January 8.

Weaver was 14-11 with a 4.22 ERA this past season and is 78-87 in seven major league seasons.

Los Angeles declined to offer arbitration to pitchers Darren Dreifort, Elmer Dessens and Wilson Alvarez, catcher Paul Bako and utility man Jose Valentin, effectively ending their tenures with the club.
