Teen hospitalized after Hawaii shark attack

Associated Press — March 1, 2006

MAKENA, Hawaii — A teen-ager who was bitten on her right calf by an 8-foot gray shark said she didn't think she was going to survive because she was in so much pain after the attack.

Nicolette "Nikky" Raleigh, 15, of Maui, remained hospitalized Tuesday. She was attacked late Monday afternoon while at a beach with her boyfriend and friend Jessy Larson.

"I just started screaming," Raleigh said Tuesday. "I was like, 'Get him off me.' And then I kicked him with my (left) foot, and Jessy pulled me out of the foot of water that we were in."

Raleigh received immediate care from a doctor, two nurses and two firefighters who happened to be at the park. Her mother and stepfather said she may have to undergo a nerve graft.

The beach remained closed Tuesday. State officials were to decide if it would reopen Wednesday.

The attack occurred about one mile from where the body of Anthony Moore of San Jose, Calif., was found Friday.

Moore, 45, had been bitten by a shark after going snorkeling Thursday. But according to preliminary autopsy results, he was likely dead before the attack.
