The Blues' 7-2 loss to Calgary on Thursday officially eliminated them from the playoffs -- notable because St. Louis had made the postseason in 25 straight seasons, the longest active streak in the NHL.
It's been a while since the Blues missed the playoffs. Back in 1978-79, the NHL consisted of only 17 teams and there was still a World Hockey Association. Wayne Gretzky hadn't begun his NHL career, Gordie Howe was still playing as a 51-year-old winger with the New England Whalers and Barry Melrose was a teammate of Mark Messier's with the Cincinnati Stingers of the WHA.
