Detroit Tigers left-handed pitcher Mike Maroth will be out two to three months after surgery to remove bone chips from his left elbow, the team said Friday.
The team said Dr. Lewis Yocum performed arthroscopic surgery on Maroth, 28, in California on Friday and called the procedure a success. The Tigers, currently leading the American League Central, hope to have him back at full strength in September for a possible run at the playoffs.
Maroth was 5-2 with a 3.56 ERA in nine starts before being placed on the 15-day disabled list a week ago. That came after a poor start against the Kansas City Royals, in which Maroth retired only one batter in a six-run first inning and allowed three home runs.
