Wolfpack coach taking leave to battle breast cancer
RALEIGH, N.C. -- North Carolina State women's basketball coach Kay Yow will take a leave of absence while she fights breast cancer.
Associate head coach Stephanie Glance will serve as interim coach, Yow and athletic director Lee Fowler said in a news release.
Yow, 64, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987. The cancer returned two years ago, and Yow was treated with oral hormonal therapies and radiation.
But doctors recently found that the cancer was progressing. This week, Yow started a combination of chemotherapy and newer targeted biologic therapies, the release said.
"I have every confidence in my coaching staff to continue the development of this outstanding group of young women," Yow said in a statement.
Glance will take NC State (3-1) to Arizona to play the Wildcats on Friday before traveling to California for a Sunday game against UC Santa Barbara.
It's Yow's 32nd season as head coach of the Wolfpack women's team. She was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001 and coached the U.S. women's team to a gold medal in the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
"Our biggest concern is for Coach Yow's health and well-being," Fowler said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with her as she goes through this difficult time."
