At Vermont, the basketball team has drawn national attention as a March Madness Cinderella, alongside traditionally strong hockey and ski teams. If Vermont were to field a Division I program, there might be no more scenic state for tailgating, but the Catamounts stopped playing football in 1974.

Vermont is a beautiful state, great for skiing, camping and maple syrup. High school football: not so much. NCAA all-time touchdown reception leader David Ball (he broke the record this year in neighboring New Hampshire) is from Orange. Spring 2006 D-I signees: zero.
