In 1916, Brown played in the second Rose Bowl, losing 14-0 to Washington State. Bears halfback and College Football Hall of Famer Fritz Pollard was the first black man to play in the Rose Bowl. Pollard's roommate, Wallace Wade, later became the first to play and coach in the Rose Bowl when he took the 1926 Alabama team to the game. Rhody Tom Ehrhardt led the nation in passing with 4,508 yards in 1985.
