Orioles' spring training home to get improvements news services

The Baltimore Orioles will keep their spring training home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., after city leaders agreeed Friday on a package of improvements at the facility -- days after they voted down a plan that relied on long-term city financing.

The decision came as the Orioles agreed to pick up the $40 million costs of improving the facility and adding baseball diamonds and soccer fields. Broward County and the state of Florida will contribute $39 million.

On Tuesday, commissioners voted against an improvement plan that would have cost the city $150,000 a year for 30 years. The Orioles have held spring training in Fort Lauderdale since 1996.

"We're happy with the decision of the commission," Orioles executive vice president John Angelos said. "We've been pursuing this for a number of years."
