Whisenhunt hires veteran assistants to staff

Associated Press

TEMPE, Ariz. -- New Arizona Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt hired three assistant coaches on Friday, including Billy Davis, recently fired as defensive coordinator by the San Francisco 49ers.

Davis will coach the Cardinals' linebackers. Whisenhunt also hired Kevin Spencer as special teams coach and John Lott as strength and conditioning coach.

Spencer was special teams coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers, where Whisenhunt was offensive coordinator for three seasons before replacing the fired Dennis Green as Cardinals head coach last Sunday.

Davis was defensive coordinator in San Francisco for two seasons. His 14-year NFL coaching career includes stops with Pittsburgh, Carolina, Cleveland, Green Bay, Atlanta and the New York Giants.

Spencer, an NFL assistant for 16 seasons, was selected as the league's special teams coach of the year by his peers in 2003. He also coached for Indianapolis, Cleveland and Oakland.

Lott was strength and conditioning coach for Cleveland the past two seasons. Before that, he held the same job for eight years with the New York Jets.

Whisenhunt hired his first assistant, Teryl Austin, as defensive backs coach on Thursday.
