A's re-sign right-hander Saarloos

Associated Press

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Kirk Saarloos and the Oakland Athletics agreed Friday to a one-year contract guaranteeing the right-hander $1.2 million and avoided arbitration.

Saarloos went 7-7 with a 4.75 ERA in 16 starts and 19 relief appearances last season. The club's No. 5 starter in 2005, he could rejoin the rotation this season under new manager Bob Geren.

In addition to his salary, he could earn a $50,000 bonus for appearing in 50 games. He also could make $300,000 based on starts: $100,000 each for 20 and 25, and $50,000 each for 27 and 30.

Saarloos, who earned $354,000 last year, had asked for $1,475,000 in arbitration and had been offered $925,000.

Right-hander Justin Duchscherer and outfielder Bobby Kielty are the only arbitration-eligible players who still haven't re-signed with the A's. Outfielder Milton Bradley and infielder Marco Scutaro agreed to one-year contracts earlier in the week.
