Official: Texas Tech player stole electronic equipment

Associated Press

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Two former Texas Tech football players and a current team member accused of stealing electronic equipment have been indicted on felony burglary charges, a county official said Wednesday.

Jerred Rashad Hunt, Dimitri Lott, and Julius M. Howard, all 19-year-old freshmen, were indicted Tuesday on one count each of second-degree felony burglary of a habitation, Lubbock County deputy district attorney Trey Hill said.

Howard, a redshirt linebacker, is still on the team, but Texas Tech coach Mike Leach dismissed the other two after the October arrests. Lott was an offensive lineman, and Hunt, a defensive end, was academically ineligible at the time of his arrest.

Leach said Tuesday that he believes Howard is innocent, based on the facts he has gathered.

"Unless that proves to be incorrect, our position is the same," he said. "He's on the team in good standing."

Police arrested the men on suspicion of burglary during an Oct. 27 traffic stop. In the car, police found a laptop and other electronic equipment, items reported missing by the homeowner, police said.
