Thompson, the former Georgia Tech star who played the PGA Tour last season, and Morland closed with 4-under 68s to finish at 8-under 280 on the Clearwater Resort course in the event co-sanctioned by the Australasian tour.
"I just played the playoff hole like any other hole," Thompson said. "All day I just tried to make shot shots and solid swings. I swung it good all day, especially on the last nine and I had chances all day."
Thompson birdied the final two holes in regulation to force the playoff.In the playoff, both players drove down the left side of the fairway on the par-4 18th, but Morland's approach went right and landed in a shallow greenside bunker while Thompson found the middle of the green.
Americans Michael Letzig (65) and Lee Williamson (69) tied for
third at 7 under, and Australia's James Nitties (71) followed at 6 under.
