Currie reunited with ex-Duke teammate Beard in Washington
WASHINGTON -- The Washington Mystics traded center Chasity
Melvin to the Chicago Sky on Thursday for forward Monique Currie.
Currie was the first overall pick in this year's dispersal draft
after the Charlotte Sting disbanded. She averaged 14.5 points, 6.5
rebounds and 1.5 assists in Chicago's first two games.
Currie was drafted No. 3 overall by Charlotte last year. She
averaged 10 points and 3.9 rebounds for the Sting in 2006. Currie,
who went to high school in Washington, played at Duke with Mystics
guard Alana Beard.
Melvin has averaged 10.7 points since joining the Mystics in
2004. She averaged 12 points and 6.5 rebounds in Washington's first
three games this season.
"It was difficult to trade a veteran player," Mystics general
manager Linda Hargrove said. "But we feel that Nakia Sanford and
