The unseeded Krajicek won last year in straight sets.

On Wednesday, fourth-seeded Safina had more aces (14 to 10), double faults (9-7) and grabbed two of her nine break chances, while Krajicek went 1-for-7.

"Dinara played really well today," Krajicek said. "I tried to get everything out of the match that I could but it didn't work out for me."

Top-seeded Jelena Jankovic advanced to the quarterfinals when Meilen Tu of the United States withdrew with a groin strain, and another American, Meghann Shaughnessy, retired with a sprained ankle while trailing fifth-seeded Daniela Hantuchova 3-6, 6-3, 5-3.

In the men's draw, top-seeded Tommy Robredo and No. 2 Ivan Ljubicic won their second-round matches. They remained the only seeds left after No. 3 Guillermo Canas was upset by German qualifier Michael Berrer 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Berrer was one of three qualifiers to reach the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon warmup.

Berrer saved all three break points in earning his first win over a top-20 player and reach his first ATP quarterfinals.

Robredo defeated Belgium's Kristof Vliegen 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-3 to make it to the Ordina quarterfinals for a fifth time. The Spaniard next meets local qualifier Peter Wessels, who beat Argentina's Carlos Berlocq 6-2, 7-6 (3).

Ljubicic put away Italy's Andreas Seppi 6-3, 6-4.

Next up for Ljubicic is Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia, a 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 winner over Czech lucky loser Lukas Dlouhy 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.

Benjamin Becker of Germany beat another lucky loser, Yves Allegro of Switzerland 6-4, 7-6 (6), for his first ATP quarterfinal on grass. He gets qualifier Antony Dupuis of France, who beat Sergio Roitman of Argentina 6-4, 7-6 (2).

Julien Benneteau of France downed local wild card Robin Haase 7-6 (5), 6-3 and meets Berrer for a berth in the semifinals.
