Practice Prose: Women's Skate Vert

By Melissa Larsen

Women's Vert practice came to a quiet close this evening, as some skaters - having sessioned the ramp since it opened for practice last Tuesday - snuck off to the STAPLES Center to watch the men's skate Big Air event. Smiles abounded on deck as those present agreed that this year's competition promises to be the best yet. There will be no televised broadcast of the event, but you can watch it online right here on our high tech live webcast, this Friday from 2:30 - 4:00 p.m. PST. Be sure to tune in and support these ripping ladies.

Lyn-z bo binzy, banana fanna fo finzy, mi my mo minzy, Lyn-Z! Backside mute grab.

"The ramp's pretty fun. It's got a lot of cool features, but the cobblestone flat bottom is really throwing me off. And then the tree in the middle with the grass around it… it's kind of hard to get around, but it's good for shade." - Lyn-Z Adams Hawkins

Hollywood movie stunt double, Holly Lyons. Frontside invert.

"Lyn-z's trying a 540. If she gets that, it'll be a contest first. Her and Karen landed kickflip indy's, which were cool. Those were probably the most advanced moves I've seen - flipping bodies or boards, you know what I mean? All the girls are skating really well, so it's hard to say who will win." - Holly Lyons

Carrot Top's not the only X-Games competitor to medal in both skate and snow. Cara-Beth won the Silver for Women's Halfpipe in '97. So there. Check the stylish feeble grind. There's more where that came from.

The level of competition is getting way better these days, and that's just with girls around here in California. And it has to be, or else it's never going to grow. It can't just be me holding it down for vert. I'm happy to see all these girls progressing. I mean, it's like, 'Holy sh*t, I have competition!' But you need that. I like it. People keep saying, 'They're coming up on you,' but it's good. How am I supposed to progress, how are we all supposed to progress, if no one's pushing it? - Cara-Beth Burnside

Tranny lover, Mimi Knoop.

"This years one of the first years it's been really tough to call. Everyone's skating so well! Lyn-z and Cara-Beth are really consistent and Karen is super technical. It's going to be an interesting contest to watch, and I think it's really going to help the sport. Who knows, though. Whoever stays on I guess." - Mimi Knoop

Violeta Ping Pong band member, artist, Brazilian vert slayer. Ladies and gentlemen: Karen Jones.

"I like Mimi's pajamas. CB and me are wearing big pads because they're very stylish - and the latest hype in the skateboard world. I just try to skate as comfortably as I can and don't really care if I look good or not." - Karen Jones
