Ohio University's Hocutt to replace Dee at Miami
CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Kirby Hocutt was hired as the University of Miami
athletic director Friday, replacing Paul Dee.
Hocutt, 36, had been the athletic director at Ohio University since 2005. The
former Kansas State linebacker also spent six years in Oklahoma's
athletic department, where he helped oversee a major fund-raising
"Everybody knows what the Miami Hurricanes are, what they're
about and their winning tradition," Hocutt said.
"It's a national brand. Coast-to-coast, anywhere you go, you see 'The U' and you know it's the University of Miami. And I take great
pride in being a part of this program."
Dee, Miami's athletic director since 1993, had announced plans to
resign in May and is expected to join Miami's faculty on June 1.
His time as athletic director was highlighted by the Hurricanes' 2001 national
football championship, two national titles in baseball and the
construction of Miami's $48 million campus basketball arena.
Under Hocutt, football season-ticket sales at Ohio University
increased 90 percent, and men's basketball season-ticket sales
increased 50 percent.
Fund-raising will be critical to Miami's future success as well,
"We think he's the perfect person for the job," Miami
president Donna Shalala said.
