Where You At Tyler King?

Back when I was cool and still riding freestyle motocross, my main man and riding buddy was this crazy bastard named Tyler "Dead" King from San Diego, California. Tyler had major skills and was constantly pushing the envelope, inventing new tricks along the way. I may be biased, but I don't think that Tyler ever received the credit and praise he deserved. Recently, Tyler hit me up, inviting me for some grub and conversation and I was on it — considering I hadn't seen the guy in ages. While putting back tall Americano's, I put the recorder up to his knowledgeable dome and here's what came out... For those of us who don't know, can you briefly explain your background in moto?

Tyler King: I have been involved in the sport for 1/4 century. I had some amateur success — Loretta's, Ponca, Good Times, GNC, Winter Olympics, etc. I had a top ten finish in my first and only SX main and I was the rookie of the year in 2006. I have been hurt just like your usual MX superhero, except I died on July 22nd, 1996, where I had open heart surgery, lacerated liver, ruptured spleen and severe internal bleeding. You have never been known as a huge contest rider, yet the legend of Tyler King lives on. Why is that?

TK: The fact that you never heard of me via winning contests is a huge testament to the underground scene that I pride myself in saying I was a part of. There was a period of 3 yrs or so, 2001-2004, where anybody winning contests was just doing recycled over-scored tricks, trying to just do it bigger than the next. Now the same is happening to a certain degree with flips. The inventiveness and individual creativity was low. Sure, I love to throw a huge extended look-back hart attack like the rest of them, but it was just so much more fun to invent new tricks. Tommy Clowers and Jeff Tilton introduced me to their ramp one day in 2002 and Mike Jones and Adam Jones were there as well. I knew that Tommy didn't do Cliffhangers, so I thought it would be cool trick to start with. At that time, most cliffhangers were more like "coat hangers" in a seated position, like the way Pastrana originally made them. If I was going to do it, I wanted to do it bigger than anybody else. I started doing them with my body in one straight line for the Clowers — Steppin' Up video. I also did my first switch grabs and kiss goodbyes for the first time. I knew the only way to do cliffhangers bigger was to put my head back, ultimately calling it a super cliffhanger. Doing them that way really fu*ks with your equilibrium — you know if you do them. Finally, I made it my own with my head back and arms crossed like a corpse in a coffin, hence the name "deadking". Try it and tell me how easy it is to get your hands back to the bars. I would put this much into every trick I ever made - super cliffhanger, deadking, special k, switch grab, king kong and kiss goodbye. I focused on making technically difficult tricks that only a small number of riders would ever try let alone do on a consistent basis and then I named them so I could live forever through other rad kids that did them to win contests. I always wanted to do one contest with a whole run of tricks that were my own.

TK: I sell internet marketing solutions to cosmetic dentists in NYC. I am married to my wife Teresa and I have a two year-old girl named Brooklynn. That's rad, congratulations! So, what made you decide to slow down with your riding and become a responsible adult and conform to society's stupid ways?

TK: Hmm, that's a very funny question and the answer is my wife. I didn't have a clue about life — I was constantly digging holes for my future by thinking of ways to make good money skate style and staying underground via mags, vids and demos. Our industry just wasn't primed for that path quite yet. I got hurt really bad more than once. My last injury was the worst, and I ended up having to have my spleen removed in Mexico City. I didn't know I still had it. Teresa spent time in the hospital with me during those last 3 injuries. I knew she was in it for the long hall and plus I think she's hot as hell. What your thoughts on the current state of FMX with the insane level it has elevated to?

TK: It's cool to see guys consistently pushing it and not relying on other riders stale tricks to get them by. There are still so many tricks to be made that I wish I had another five years to do them. Most all of the current trick innovation involves flips, which I can't piss on cause I never did them, but it's unfortunate that riders aren't concentrating on expanding their non-flip repertoire as well. I remember in the Evolution Ramp era (2002-2004), it seemed like every time you and I rode together, one of us was trying something we'd never seen before. Nothing else seemed to matter other than trying things just because no one had before then. Watching you invent box hangers and the nac in the box was pretty cool sh*t. From what they started as to what they became was such a huge shift. That's what my FMX existence was all about. Being one of the five people to watch Metzger do the first distance flips at Dumont Dunes — judging X Games and trying not to score Deegan's first 360 after the buzzer. Just to be there and see it go down is what I value the most. The cool thing is that most of us diehards all have these cool stories to pass on 40 years from now. If I haven't seen you for a while the first thing I'll probably ask you is "Have you made any new tricks lately?"

Buyten Bores Up

Matt Buyten plans to be hopping bar on a Honda CRF450 in 2008.
After calling up Matt Buyten to chat about random nothings, I had learned that he just purchased himself a Honda CRF450. At first I thought it was just for trail riding sessions and the dunes, but then it struck me — did he buy that 450 for step up? At last years X Games, Renner took step up win upon the big KTM450, showing that the sport had changed and the 450's power may have been a part of Renner's winning ingredient. So, I asked Buyten if that's the real reason he copped himself a 450, and as I had predicted, that was indeed his main motive for buying his new big bore. "After watching Renner take the win and seeing how much bottom end power the 450 had, I decided that I needed to make the switch to compete with him at X next year", explains Buyten.

I decided to hit Ronnie Renner up to get his take on riding the 450 for step up and what he said actually surprised me. "I actually had a couple of reasons as to why I chose to ride my 450 four stroke instead of my 250 two stroke. Most people think that it was because of the extra horsepower, but they are wrong. To set that theory straight, yes, a 450 has more torque, but let me remind you that a 450 weighs a lot more than a 250 and has more moving parts in the engine, so it is way tougher to maneuver in the air. Also, the gravity theory is in effect, so what comes up must come down and a 450 comes down a lot harder", explains Renner.

"The first reason I rode the 450 is simple — I was really comfortable riding it because I had been riding it a lot on my track at home. Secondly, I practiced on both bikes and felt about the same on both bikes, so I figured if the set up was good when I arrived, that it would be good PR for me to come in and try something different. I actually started having second thoughts and showed up the Staples Center with all my stickers on my 250. I was super-confident on both bikes and felt like that night was going to be mine, regardless. When I saw the lip, I figured it would be cool to go out and turn some heads on the 450, park it and then go get the 250 and really commit to going big. After I hit the lip the first time and rode back around the corner, I saw peoples jaws on the floor. A couple of jumps later I was so comfortable going way higher than guys that I decided why not. The rest may be history, but you know what, I will laugh if everyone shows up on a 450 at the Moto X championships in April and I end up deciding to ride a 250 — I'm sneaky like that!", says Renner.

Matt Buyten wants to reclaim his position at the top of the step up podium, but beating Renner will be his biggest obstacle.

Adam Barker on the Making of Hotchkiss Meats

The main reason we made Hotchkiss Meats is because I wanted to use my grandpa and his slaughterhouse in a film. He stars in the movie and and all the locations we filmed at are his. I've wanted to shoot something in Colorado for a long time because I grew up spending my summers there and working at the slaughterhouse - I just needed a script. My friend from my old punk band, Chris Martino and I wrote the script in a couple days, and then re-wrote it over the span of a month. From there we just recruited all of our friends and made it happen.

The script is different than the typical type of stuff I shoot - it was cool to try something and step out of the box. I had cameos from motocross riders Dan Pastor and Larry Linkogle. I picked those guys because I know them from filming M80 and we have filmed skits together, so I knew they could both act really well if they tried - and they were both down to it. Larry was a little sketched out at first because it had a robot and an old man in it and he was like "what the hell", but he was pumped on the slaughterhouse and the fact that he got to be covered in blood, so he agreed.

They both did a really good job. Larry can channel his insanity so good it's pretty intense. Unfortunately, his best acting got cut because of the pace of the story. I just told Dan to play it "icy" and understated like he's a brewing, raging psycho right under the surface. When they arrived at my grandpas ranch, they were really into it. Larry was pumped because my grandpa was a world war 2 pilot with lots of gnarly, brutal war stories and Dan went fishing and hunting during the down time - I think he even wants to move there. It's funny, we'd be filming and those guys would be scouting places to ride moto every ten seconds. They were dying to shape kickers in my grandpa's land and ride because the dirt is so good. I really don't know why we didn't because he had tractors ready to rip - maybe it'll be in a future episode of M80 or something.

Dan Pastor on Acting and Hotchkiss Meats

Filming for Hotchkiss was my third time acting. I did A Yamaha commercial this year where I act like a supercross rider - that's right, that's me on the track. Then I acted in my M80 skit, but that was easy because I was just playing myself. Hothckiss Meats was definitely the first gig I did that had nothing to do with riding, however I did get to rip a vintage bike down the road. Acting with Linkogle was fun and we for sure had more fun than anyone else during the shoot. He almost ran me over with a truck while I was on that vintage bike - it was hilarious.

I'd like to do more acting in the future because I have a great time doing it. Adam Barker is one of those guys that when he calls me to go do something, I try as hard as possible to get there because I know it will be something that I wouldn't normally just decided to do!
Larry Linkogle has a lot of acting under his belt and it shows.
Creator, Adam Barker's Grandpa does an amazing job at playing a grumpy, lonely old man in Hotchkiss Meats.
Though this is not a moto film, Adam Barker was able to work a vintage TT into the script for all the diehard motoheads.

Mickey VS. Mikey

Just the other night, I caught wind that FMX badass Mike Mason was heading to a Mickey Avalon show in Reno, Nevada with his buddy Jorge Alvarez and roommate "Drinky". I knew that it was going to be out of control considering Mickey and Mikey are probably two of the hardest partying dudes I know. Really, the only difference between the two is that one raps and acts like a freak to pay the bills and one rides a moto bike like a freak to make his loot. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you my photo essay I would like to call Mickey VS. Mikey — may the best man win. Ding Ding!

Round 1: This round goes to Mikey Mason for the simple fact that he's showing that he hangs out with nothing but the gnarliest of the gnar party people. Drinky (left) and Jorge get primed up for the nights debauchary.

Round 2: Mickey Avalon takes round two, upping Drinky and Jorge by bringing Andre Legacy as his wingman. Andre's Oxycontin shirt says it all.

Round 3: Mikey Mason wins hands down. Jorge mach's Avalon's fu%ked up facial pose from the previous photo, making Avalon look like a bit of a kook. Ouch!

Round 4: Um, after viewing this photo for over 30 minutes, I've come to the conclusion that Mickey Avalon wins this round. Mason and Drinky look to be getting a little too "friendly" in this image.

Round 5: What is Dirt Nasty laughing at? I'd have to say he's giggling at Mikey Mason's facial contact with Drinky as shown in the previous photo. Mickey Avalon takes round 5.

Round 6: Ladies seem to flock to Mickey Avalon like a morbidly obese kid to a Wienerschnitzel chili cheese dog. Granted, the chicks that Avalon pulls are dirtier than his Hanes, he pulls them by the hordes, handing this round to Avalon.

Round 7: Bam! Mike Mason has knocked Mickey Avalon to the ground and he's down for the count! Avalon may have had some skankies shaking it on stage, but Mikey Mason wins round 7 by a knock out, leaving the club with two groupies and double vision.

Tonight's heavyweight championship belt goes to Mikey Mason of Carson City, Nevada! Congratulations Mr. Mason. You my friend are a true legend. Mickey who?

Deegan Shows Off His Crib for MTV Tomorrow Night

Be sure to catch MTV Cribs this Tuesday, January 29th, at 11:00 P.M. EST, as Brian Deegan will be showing off his pad and training compound located in Temecula, CA. From what I hear, Deegan's Cribs segment is pretty hilarious and even includes a few cameos from some familiar "ripped" Mulisha members. As for my episode of Cribs, I'm still in negotiations with some MTV producers. The only problem we seem to be running into is how we can exactly fit the camera crew into a treehouse.

Costa Rica X-Knights Contest Around The Corner

A couple days ago, my long time friend and pro FMX rider Rudy Waller, hit me up to see if I'd be interested in heading over to Costa Rica with him and a gang of top international FMX riders to cover the X-Knights contest, which takes place in the capital city of San Jose. It took some major convincing on his part, considering I've been having an epic time staying cooped up in my house playing Tiger Woods 2007 and Guitar Hero while Southern California continues to flood — but after thinking about it long and hard, I decided hell, why not — I could use a bit of a get away from my stressful schedule-free life.
Last years X-Knights course was simple yet effective. Expect to see a more technical course for 2008.
I have been to Costa Rica in the past to ride numerous FMX events and every event I go to seems be better than the last. Costa Rican's absolutely love motocross and Costa Rica has actually produced some amazing motocross talent including Ernesto Fonseca and Adrian Roberts. "Costa Rica is a motorcycle nation. There are millions of people riding little bikes around the country, so everyone shares the same passion for motorcycles and motorcycle sporting events", states Waller.

This years X-Knights event will be it's second year in existence and will no doubt be much more spectacular than the previous year's event due to the expanded rider line up and elevated level of riding. I'm really looking forward to shooting photos at this event, but hopefully Rudy will be able to get me some type of VIP passes, because from what
I have no idea what this flyer says, but I like the way it looks.
I understand, this event sells out and the fans get rowdy! "Last year was the first event and there were 30,000 plus Costa Rican fans going crazy in the national soccer stadium — they are some of the best fans in the world", says Rudy.

Also, another cool element of this year's X-Knights event is the celebrity judging panel, which includes FMX legends "Mad" Mike Jones, "The Flyin' Hawaiian" Clifford Adoptante, Rudy "Latin Limo" Waller and Ernesto Fonseca.

2008 Sponsor Switch-Ups

Well, it's that time of the year again, and no I'm not talking about when you start to plan an overly cheesy scheme to express your love for your valentine. I'm talking about that time of the year when sponsor contracts end and negotiations begin. For this quick sponsor update, there really aren't any overly exciting or drastic sponsor switch-ups, but there is one that may surprise you, but we'll save that for last.
Twitch will be repping Yamaha of Troy in 2008.

First up is Jeremy "Twitch" Stenberg. Last year Twitch was receiving bikes and parts straight from Factory Yamaha, but it seems as if they decided to change their athlete program, leaving Twitch bike-less for '08. Why Yamaha would decide to drop Twitch absolutely boggles my mind and leaves me dumbfounded, but luckily Yamaha of Troy's team manager, Chris McAvoy, was there to snatch him up before anyone else had the chance. I spoke to Twitch about his new bike sponsor and he is very psyched to be flying the Yamaha of Troy flag in 2008. More than likely, the Yamaha of Troy logo will dominate the bottom portion of Twitch's radiator shroud. contributor Chris Tedesco is looking for a supercross championship title in 2024.

In other random-who-cares sponsor news, photo contributor, Chris Tedesco made the decision that he wanted to start ripping it up with the big boys. Since those Southern Californian's are having such an awesome wet winter, what better time to come out of retirement? Chris cruised out to Valencia, California with his roommate, Metal Mulisha rider Derek Garland, to meet Yamaha of Troy's Chris McAvoy and pick up his shiny new Yamaha YZ450F. Shift Racing hooked Tedesco up with some new duds to compliment his new ride and they even printed his name and number on the back of his jersey! I guess if you can't go fast, you might as well look good, right? Chris told me that his goal for 2008 is to get his big YZ450F out of second gear — unfortunately for Chris, 2010 may be more of a realistic date to experience third gear. Ha, just teasing buddy!

Last, but most definitely not least, Myles Richmond has picked up a new clothing sponsor that goes by the name of SRH. Supposedly, Jesse Conard of SRH hit Myles up via email mentioning that they were interested in sponsoring him for the 2008 season. What seems to be a bit of a weird athlete/company pairing has actually turned out to be very smooth and natural relationship. "I was a bit timid at first because some of the riders they have sponsored in the past aren't anything like me. I thought about it for a while, but once I actually went down to the SRH warehouse to meet everyone and get a feel for the company, I knew that it was the right thing to do. They were all very respectful and had a great attitude", Myles explains. "So far, it has only been about one month into the relationship and everything is going awesome. I plan on representing them as best as possible this year as I know they will continue to take great care of me", states Myles.

Transworld MX Magazine Staff Calls It Quits!

Recently, Transword's Ryan Cooley, Garth Milan and Luis Rodriguez parted ways from Editor-in-Chief Donn Maeda to start their own media venture in hopes of elevating their careers. Though the situation may seem similar to that of the great Transworld skate staff departure , the ex-moto staffers have no intentions to create a competing publication. I sat down with The Ryan Cooley to squash the rumors and get the facts regarding their new business venture. Tell me about the company. Who is involved, what are your roles, what do you do, what makes you different?

Ryan Cooley: The Medium Creative Group consists of its three founding members — Garth Milan, Luis Rodriguez, and myself — in no particular order. Garth's label is Photography Director, Luis goes by Creative Director, and I am affectionately known as the Project Director, though we all answer to anything. When it really came down to it, though, the three of us came to the realization that we have a lot more to offer — a lot more that we'd like to accomplish with our individual talents. Each of our skills compliments one another's very nicely from a business standpoint, so it was really a no-brainer to move forward in our careers together. Was it a scary move to leave a place where all of you had been working for so long?

RC: Hell yeah it was! The initial jump was one of the most nerve-racking moves of our lives, but it had to be done. We're focused, prepared, and really feel like we're doing this for all of the right reasons. We're confident in our ability as a group, and we've received a lot of support from our industry friends, which has made the transition a lot more meaningful. is the ultimate goal for The Medium Creative Group?

RC: We want to have fun. We'd like to grow; we'd like to take our clients to a level otherwise unobtainable; hell, we'd even like to turn a profit at some point, but more than anything, we'd like to have fun doing it. Who are some of your clients that have supported you from the beginning?

Once upon a time I met some kid while I was shooting photos at Myles Richmond's riding compound in Banning, California. He seemed like a very cool and down to earth kid who was pumped just to be around FMX pros' like Doug Parsons and Myles Richmond. Every now and then, he would get in my shot while trying to shoot photos of his own, but it didn't bug me too much since I knew he was shooting with such a sh*t camera. I mean how could this little tool pose any threat to me? it turns out, that that little tool named Bryan Buchanan grew up and turned into one of the most amazing photographers I know. After working at I Shock for one year, Bryan amazed clients with his amazing web design and graphic design skills leading to amazing jobs such as working on The Killers website as well as Dog the Bounty Hunter's site. Today, Bryan continues on his very promising career path working as a regular contributor for Dirt Rider magazine, Mini Moto magazine and Transworld Motocross magazine.

Potter's Passport

Todd Potter's passport has been busy as of late.

Metal Mulisha's Todd Potter has been a traveling man of late, getting his passport stamped like a man on the run from the law. Within a matter of two weeks, Todd has traveled to San Sebastian, Spain and Tignes, France for some off-season contests. It's very hard for us Americans to keep up with all of the overseas events, so I thought it would be cool to show you guys what really goes on in between X Games and the AST Dew Tour. For riders like Todd, these overseas events can be a nice source of extra income as well as a way to see the world on someone else's dime and make a grip of new fans while doing so.

Right after Christmas, Todd was ready to head to San Sebastian, Spain for an event that was put on by some of the people behind the Red Bull X Fighters contests. It was a one-day event that took place inside of a bull-fighting arena, meaning that the course itself was very tight and technical with little room for error. Todd was selected to ride last and after watching riders like Drake McElroy, Spain's Danny Torres, Japan's Eigo Sato, France's Manu Troux and Thomas Pages' have trouble with the course, Todd was a bit sketched out especially since he had hit the wall in the previous day's practice session. "After watching Torres crash in his run, I was pretty sketched out because I know that he rarely crashes, so I immediately knew that I had to be cautious during my run so that I could go home in one piece. was a bit too cautious and I ended up hitting the ramp too slow when I went for a backflip indy. I under-rotated a bit and came up a tad short resulting in a pretty nasty face plant", says Todd. Potter was a bit dazed from the crash, but was able to get up and finish his second run for the fanatical Spanish crowd.

"I had a good time in Spain and the crowd was insane! I took my brother Cidney and we had a good time. The after parties were out of hand and I really dug the old Spanish style architecture. It was a cool event and I would definitely do it again. I'm just glad I made it home in one piece!" says Todd.

The Tignes set up posed a bit of a problem for the riders.

After a brief stay at home, Todd found himself back at LAX and on his way to Tignes, France for the Tignes Airwaves event held in the Swiss Alps region of France. This event is unique as it incorporates steel take-off ramps with perfectly chiseled ice landings. "I was really pumped to go to the Tignes Airwaves event because I was told that it was going to be a demo and there would be no pressure to hang it out. When I got there, the story had changed and the promoter informed me that it was indeed a contest", says Todd. "I really don't care either way, I just have more fun doing demos. Since it was a contest and they were giving out trophies, I couldn't just sit back and not try - I wanted a trophy!" explains Todd.
Landing on ice glaciers is a lot tougher than it looks.
The event went over smooth as the riders were able to perform well, but they encountered a few difficulties with the ramp to snow set up. After landing, the riders had to ride a patch of snow to get back onto the expanded metal leading up to the ramps, ultimately causing a wet and slick take off. In the end, Eigo Sato of Japan took home the win followed by Potter and Pages'. Mission accomplished — Todd got his trophy.

After being home for a day, Potter decided to have a little BBQ and found that his bad luck from Spain had followed him home. The day after his little shindig, Potter cruised out to his van to grab his gear bag so he could go riding. Upon opening the door to his van, Todd noticed that his gear bag was nowhere to be found. Had it of been just a gear bag with gear in it, this wouldn't have been too big of a deal, but since he had just got back from France, his
Tignes podium. Eigo Sato took the win with Potter placing second and Thomas Pages' taking third. Todd got his trophy so he was happy.
gear bag was loaded with valuables from his trip. Todd's suspension, gear, boots, super flip levers, exhaust, plastics, clothes, trophy and Sirius satellite radio were all pronounced missing. To top it off, he ended up getting the flu later that day. This was definitely not the ending Todd had hoped for, but at least it was all said and done — for now anyway. Todd will be heading to Costa Rica in early February for another overseas contest adventure. Hopefully this one will end on a happier note and not the Ebola virus.

Video Review: FMX East — Gaps and Grillz

Before watching Gaps and Grillz, I really didn't know too much about the FMX East crew. I kind of knew that they were a bunch of crazy loose canons that rode FMX, but I had no idea who they were personally or what they represented. After popping Gaps and Grillz in my laptop and clicking play, I've come to the conclusion that my previous interpretation of them was right — and then some.

Gaps and Grillz is a laugh out loud film put together by FMX East founder Clint Esposito and Kyle Huber of 313 Creations. Unlike most unscripted and thoughtless riding flicks, Gaps and Grillz sets the tone with the riders taking on hilarious bling rapper aliases such as 50cc, Cee Motor and Popa Wheelie. Before each riding segment (Florida, Texas and ATL), these characters converse with Riot Radio's DJ to hilariously lead the viewer into the following riding scene. The dialogue can get a bit tedious and redundant at times, but 50cc (Clint Esposito) does a very good job at keeping things funny with his gangster moto slang.

Without the funny music video spoofs (Trickin' Dirty and Wafflin') and skits, Gaps and Grillz would still hold up against the competition as the riding and filming remains top notch. Integrating film and standard DV video, Kyle does a great job of showcasing the riders' bike skills and FMX gnarness without going overboard on the star wipes and A.D.D. style editing.

Just like any moto film, the riding gets a bit repetitive. Watching ramp jump after ramp jump tends to make me lose my concentration and think about what I want for dinner. I would have liked to see more freeriding and contest footage interlaced throughout, but all in all, the ramp action is insane, so it's a hard to be mad at that.

I would definitely suggest this film to any FMX fan who wants to see how the East Coast boys get it done or anyone who just wants a good laugh while getting their FMX fix at the same time. To own your own copy, check out Impact Video and have your credit card ready — operators are standing by.

Busty is also a very persistant business man, constantly sending out updates to his list of industry insiders. I was able to get my hands on Busty's latest update so I thought it was only right to share it with you. This letter is super top secret, so be sure not to tell anyone you saw it here first on

Hello! Ok, so my December schedule was way too full to give you a weekly update, so here comes a short summary of my month. First off, I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year in 2008! My December started with the SX in Geneva/Switzerland. The SX racing was great, the crowd was great and the FMX show had awesome riders such as Mat Rebeuad, Todd Potter, Alvaro Dal Farra, Ronnie Renner, Thamer Engeli, Bertrand and myself. The setup was nice and I actually surprised myself a little bit by learning no hand back flips in the first practice of the 2nd day!

After Switzerland, I worked a few days at Fox Racing in Germany to get more motivation and it helped me focus on my riding...hahaha! After three days of getting an idea of how "real" work is, I flew to Dubai for the Dubai X-Games. Unfortunately, I wasn't riding the event, but instead I was judging it. Dubai was a great experience and the riding was sick as well.

Once I was back from Dubai, I went to the Suzuki Snow camp in Austria to represent Suzuki and go snowboarding for a few days. Straight from the snow camp, I went to the Supercross Over in Munich. The Supercross Over was a great event, especially with the mix of SX, supermoto, FMX, MTX dirt jump and the premier Indoor Enduro World Cup event. The Enduro event was by far the most entertaining to watch! Unfortunately, I had a little bit of bad luck at the FMX show on Friday. After a no hand flip, I landed a little bit sideways and went into the hay bales. I went over the bars and landed on my head. I got a nice concussion and had a 2-3 hour loss of memory from the prior two weeks. I was asking questions like "Oh, I was in Dubai? What did I do there?" or "What, Alve broke his foot?... Oh, I remember... but it didn't happen here!" (Alvaro broke his foot on Friday's practice... so I was wrong). Since I was all banged up, I had to skip the boarder week event and I missed out on some awesome snowboard action.
Forget Austin Powers, Busty is THE international man of mystery.
However, I was back on the bike for Jimmy Verburgh's Rock'N'Ride event a week later. The show was pretty good, but I feel sorry for Jimmy because the spectator turnout was not as big as expected. Still, Jimmy put in a lot of effort and had many good ideas, so hopefully it will be on again next year. Of course the after party was great, but I wouldn't expect it to be any different with Jimmy being the main man behind the event!

I took it easy for Christmas and enjoyed my time with the family. Afterwards I went on a snowboard vacation with my family during New Years. I loved turning off my phone and not checking any emails. It was very relaxing!

Straight from that holiday vacation, I went to the SX in Dortmund, Germany as they had their 25th anniversary. Remi Bizouard, Fab Bauersachs, Nick DeWit, Libor Polmolski, Lukas Weis and myself did a sweet show on all three days and the crowd went nuts - same procedure as every year.

Now I am off for another vacation to South Africa to get my energy level up for next season. The year will start strong with four Masters of Dirt events in a row, starting at the end of February.

Radical Reality

Jimmie's been working on his pose ever since he found out filming was a go on his reality show gig.
Yes, it's true, reality shows have completely spun out of control and our zombified brains are to blame. With ratings shooting through the heavens, shows like Life of Ryan, Sunset Tans and The Hills are dumbing down our nation by the truckload. Though these shows are very interesting, especially when you have no life of your own to pay attention to, they are taking away TV airtime from quality broadcasting like The Price is Right and America's Funniest Home Videos (what up Barker and Saget). But imagine this, what if these reality shows revolved around characters you actually care about? People such as Carey Hart, Jimmie McGuire and Kyle Loza? You'd probably be much more intrigued to tune in and at least kill your brain cells on a niche you really enjoy submersing yourself in.

Recently, I was talking to my friend Dan McGranahan at Icon1 Agency and he tipped me off to a reality show that a couple of his riders were about to begin filming. The details remain very tight lipped, but supposedly the show revolves around 5 main characters that all happen to be professional "extreme" athletes. Oklahoma's Jimmie McGuire and Orange County's Kyle Loza are the two main FMX riders, but supposedly there will be guest appearances from other professional FMXer's as well.

"It's a reality show with class", states McGuire. Granted that is hard to believe considering that it IS still a reality show. However, I do believe Jimmie wouldn't be involved in a production that does not represent his strong ethical beliefs. "It took me a couple hours to get used to the camera's constantly being in my face, but once I got over the fear, it was really easy to act normal. It's really cool having the crew follow us around and showing the side of our lives that people normally don't have the chance to see, but there are times when they go a bit too far and you have to tell them to stop rolling film. There are just certain parts of our life that we don't want people to see and that goes for everyone", says Jimmie.

Carey Hart is the ultimate reality show star with Inked and The Surreal Life under his belt.
Jimmie and crew expect filming to proceed for another three months or so and say that the show should be broadcasting on TV in 8 months. For the viewer that expects to see a lot of riding, you may be disappointed as there is a projected 30% riding 70% lifestyle ratio. Lips are sealed as to what channel the show will appear on, but expect it to be a fully legit deal. I don't know about you, but I'm actually excited — hopefully American Idol is over by then...
