Rose works out for Heat in Santa Monica Saturday
By Andy Katz
Memphis freshman guard Derrick Rose worked out in front of the Miami Heat coaching staff Saturday at St. Monica Catholic High School in Santa Monica, Calif.
Rose's agent, former NBA guard B.J. Armstrong, confirmed that Heat coaching staff watched Rose to get a sense of him as a player on the court and also took him out to lunch Saturday. Heat president Pat Riley wasn't able to attend but Armstrong said Rose spent time with Riley on the phone.
The Heat has the No. 2 pick in Thursday's draft. Rose worked out for his hometown Chicago Bulls this past Thursday and spent two days with the Bulls' decision makers, including general manager John Paxson and new coach Vinny Del Negro. Rose hasn't hid his desire to play in his hometown and be selected No. 1 by Chicago.
Armstrong said there was no intent to slight the Heat but the tight scheduling window of wanting to wait until after the Bulls scheduled workout prevented Rose from going to Miami this weekend. Rose will be in New York late Monday night for the draft and they didn't want Rose having to crisscross the country multiple times back to his L.A. base where he has been working out during the draft process.
Kansas State freshman forward Michael Beasley, the other potential No. 1 pick, worked out in Chicago and in Miami this past week.
