WESTMINSTER, Md. -- Baltimore Ravens starting cornerback Samari Rolle will miss the beginning of training camp this week due to the sudden death of his father, the team confirmed Tuesday.

Rolle's father, Harry Rolle, died of a heart attack last week. The funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, and Ravens coach John Harbaugh provided Samari an excused absence to go beyond the team's Wednesday deadline for veterans to report to camp.

"It's a tough situation for him," Harbaugh said. "He's trying to keep his family together. I don't expect him [Wednesday], because I told him to take as much time as he needs."

Rolle has had a tough year. He was set back by his battle with epilepsy last season that held him out for 10 games and now has to come to terms with losing his father.

The 11-year veteran and former Pro Bowl player is penciled in as the Ravens' starter as long as he can stay healthy. The Ravens struggled last year when he was out of the lineup and finished 5-11 last season.

Baltimore acquired former first-round pick Fabian Washington in a trade with the Oakland Raiders to provide depth at the cornerback position.

Rookies, quarterbacks and injured veterans practiced for the first time Tuesday, while the rest of the team will report and take physicals on Wednesday.
