One Cold Hustler and one Hot
Yesterday, I was doing some trekking around NYC. That's the cool thing about the Jersey Shore, after getting sick ones on Sunday, you can get to the city in 90 minutes. Somewhere in Midtown, I caught a guy walking around with no shoes on.
The barefoot beggar. Excuse the shoddy photo. I was undercover.
No shoes! Fully bare feet. It was literally 19 degrees. He was panhandling and I actually considered finding the guy some shoes, flip flops, something.
Then I get on the subway to head down to the Lower East Side because I'm a last minute shopper. Guess who's on my subway car. Yeah, the panhandler. And he dumps out his cup. I was curious to see how much change he made, but there was green in there, and some legit bills too. I could see more than a few $20 spots. He starts counting his money right on the train, and there's well over $100 from one session of beggary.
I shot this with my phone, simply because the guy had the audacity to count his money (still barefoot) in public. And I had actually thought about helping him!
The shot's a little shaky, as I was trying not to be too obvious. I attempted to get a better one, but he was on to me, and wasn't going to hesitate in causing a scene.
Not even going to try to segue that into today's blog, just had to share that.
Contests or not, this guy has no need to panhandle.
It seems that Quiksilver's next big thing (or one of them anyway) will not be putting his efforts into collecting WQS points this year, but rather to collecting clips. According to Jon Tuxworth's Sunshine Coast Daily article, the Aussie charger has announced,
"I'm not going to do the 'QS next year; I'm going to do a movie. I'll do a few (events) I can get wildcards into through Quiksilver, but I'm definitely not chasing them. It's going to be all over the world. We'll pick some locations, wait for the best swells and fly there. I'm excited about it."
Word is that Wilson will be filming for a film funded by Bruce and Andy Irons' production company. As you may well know, Bruce decided midway through 2008 that this was his last season on tour and AI made the decision to take 2009 off after the recent Billabong Pipeline Masters. But we know what happened the last time a Quiksilver future star didn't take the WQS full on he qualified.
Wilson, regarded by many to be among the best of the new generation, has been recovering from a fairly serious ankle injury. This isn't surprising. But I fear the ASP may be in for some thin times ahead, loosing many competitors to the freesurf scene, especially if there's no ten quest next year.
