Cubs, RHP Wuertz agree to $1.1 million deal

CHICAGO -- Relief pitcher Michael Wuertz and the Chicago Cubs agreed Tuesday on a $1.1 million, one-year contract that avoided salary arbitration.

Wuertz was 1-1 with a 3.63 ERA in 45 appearances for the Cubs last season. He also spent time at Triple-A Iowa.

The 30-year-old right-hander is 13-7 with one save and a 3.57 ERA in 265 relief appearances since his major league debut with the Cubs in 2004. He has 270 strikeouts in 262 1-3 innings.
