The first major negotiating session between the Tennessee Titans and defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth offered some optimism that both sides could reach an agreement before the start of free agency, sources said on Monday.

Haynesworth was the Titans franchise player last season, By going to the Pro Bowl he triggered a clause in his contract that prevents the Titans from franchising him in 2009. During the season, there were virtually no negotiations.

Last week, both sides exchanged ideas and the Titans didn't rule out paying Haynesworth $12 million per year plus considerations. He is considered the best impact defensive tackle on the free-agent market and could receive compensation in line with a top defensive end such as Jared Allen.

Sources indicate that Haynesworth would prefer to work out a deal with the Titans, the team that drafted him into the league.
