TORONTO -- Former star center Eric Lindros resigned Tuesday as ombudsman of the National Hockey League Players' Association.

NHLPA senior spokesman Jonathan Weatherdon confirmed the move. Lindros declined comment via text message to ESPN.com on Tuesday night.

Lindros was a key contributor in the group of people that helped reshape the union after the controversial firing of former executive director Ted Saskin.

He was named to the newly created position of ombudsman in November 2007 as part of the new NHLPA constitution. The role was one of watchdog.

Reports surfaced this season that Lindros did not see eye to eye with NHLPA executive director Paul Kelly.
