The Kai Barger Show

Take a photographic voyage around the world with Kai

For an aspiring young surfer, I can't reckon there's much better way to start the New Year than by winning a world title. A month ago, 19-year-old Kai Barger showed up in Australia, squared off against the best of his generation, and did just that. Given the absurd amount of talent around the world, not to mention just coming out of Kai's home island of Maui—a list that includes Dusty Payne, Granger Larson, and Clay Marzo—by no fault of his own, Kai may have been construed has somewhat of a dark horse. But as you'll see in this short collection of photographic and video imagery, the kid gets it done, no matter what ocean, no matter how big. In recent months he's shown up on the cover of Surfer Magazine, turned a few heads at Off The Wall, then obviously won a world title, and followed that up with a month-long walkabout through Australia. I'd say in the coming years you'd be seeing a lot more of young Kai, but it would appear he's all over the place already. But the best part about his successes? Soft-spoken and humble about all the hype and hoopla, it couldn't all be happening to a nicer kid.
