BOYS' ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Carmel / Football
The season may have ended in disappointment for Carmel, but Newton left
everything out on the field. The senior quarterback threw for 1,938 yards and
22 touchdowns and ran for an additional 1,664 yards and 26 TDs. Newton led
the Greyhounds to the state title game in each of the last three years, including
the championship season of 2007, and only an improbable series of
onside kicks by Center Grove kept Carmel from winning back-to-back titles
this season. The Kentucky signee was the Gatorade State Player of the Year.
Zionsville / Soccer
Just a junior, Petts scored a remarkable 41 goals and notched 26 assists
this season while leading Zionsville to a 20-4-1 record and a spot in the
state title game.
Bishop Luers / Basketball
The 6-foot-7 junior forward scored 30.3 points per game to lead the
Knights to the Class 2A state title. Thomas is 881 points away from being
Indiana's all-time leading scorer (he scored 817 points this season).
Chesterton / Swimming
Whitaker won state titles in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly for the third year
in a row, and the junior also set a national high school record in the 200
GIRLS' ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Delta / Volleyball
Dorton was unstoppable this season, hammering home devastating kills
from her outside hitter position and driving Delta to the state championship.
The 6-foot-2 spike artist finished the year with 601 kills (5.1 per game) and a
hitting percentage of .371, earning a spot on the Under Armour All-American
first team. Dorton, ranked No. 2 in the Class of 2009 by PrepVolleyball.com, is
headed to Penn State next year. After leading the Eagles to the Class 3A title,
she was named the Gatorade State Player of the Year.
South Bend Washington / Basketball
Diggins was spectacular in 2008-09, averaging 29.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, 6.2
assists and 5.4 steals per game. The Notre Dame-bound senior was the
Gatorade National Player of the Year.
Whiting / Softball
Although Dumezich got off to a late start this season following ACL surgery,
she is still the best player in the state. The senior pitcher led Indiana
in strikeouts last year.
Bishop Dwenger / Soccer
Killion had a breakout sophomore season, tallying 19 goals and 25 assists
to win the Gatorade State Player of the Year award. She has already committed
