Xavier holds the edge on Sam Houston late
HOUSTON -- Neil Lindgren's two-run homer in the seventh inning has boosted Xavier to an 8-6 lead over Sam Houston State after seven innings in an NCAA tournament elimination game at Reckling Park.
Lindgren jumped on a fat fastball delivered by Sam Houston reliever Matt Shelton and blasted it over the wall in left field for the lead with one out in the seventh inning.
The Xavier rally came after Sam Houston had pecked away to tie the score in its half of the seventh after trailing 6-2 after three innings.
Reliever Jordan Conley has six outs left in order to finish off the Musketeers' first NCAA tournament victory. Conley started the game as Xavier's shortstop.
Xavier got a gutty effort from starting pitcher Danny Rosenbaum, who scattered seven hits over 6 2/3 innings. Rosenbaum remained ahead in most counts, striking out nine in a gritty 124-pitch effort.
The Musketeers jumped to a quick 6-2 lead after three innings, but the Bearkats kept chipping away at the margin, adding three runs in the fourth and another in the seventh inning to tie the score.
Sam Houston State will need another rally or it will go two-losses-and-out for the second straight season in the NCAA tournament.
