Arizona State-UNC starting lineups

The first Sunday in Omaha carries plenty of weight. The first game of the day (ESPN/ESPN360, 2 p.m. ET) begins North Carolina's attempt to bring the ACC its first College World Series title since Wake Forest won it all in 1955; Arizona State gives the Pac-10 a representative in Omaha for the 13th straight year while looking for its first championship since 1981.

Carolina's roster is Omaha-savvy, having qualified for the CWS the past four years, and the Tar Heels had two first-round Major League Baseball draft picks on Tuesday -- first baseman Dustin Ackley and pitcher Alex White.

The Sun Devils have the best earned run average in baseball.

After Cal State Fullerton and Virginia took losses Saturday, two more teams will be 0-1 by Sunday's end, with the odds stacked heavily against them. In the past 28 years, only two teams have lost their opening game at the CWS and bounced back to win the championship. Oregon State did it in 2006, and USC did it in 1998.
