• July 4, 1888: The first professional rodeo in America is held in Prescott, Ariz.

• July 4, 1919: Jack Dempsey brutally defeats Jess Willard to capture the world heavyweight title in Toledo, Ohio.

• July 4, 1934: Joe Louis wins his professional debut by knocking out Jack Kracken in Chicago.

• July 4, 1966: President Lyndon Johnson signs the Freedom of Information Act, empowering Arkansas fans with the legal means to scrutinize and chase away their football coaches.

• July 4, 2006: The Cleveland Indians hit six home runs and pound out a 19-1 victory over the New York Yankees on George Steinbrenner's 76th birthday.

July 4, 1939: Legendary Yankees first baseman Lou Gehrig delivered his famous "Luckiest Man on the Face of the Earth" speech between games of a doubleheader against Washington in front of more than 60,000 fans at Yankee Stadium.
