National final matchups secured

By US Youth Soccer

LANCASTER, Mass. -- The US Youth Soccer National Championships round robin play ended Friday and the championship match schedule is set. National Champions will be crowned over the weekend in the under-14 through under-19 boys and girls age groups beginning on Saturday afternoon with the under-14s and under-15s. The remaining age groups will play Sunday morning at the Citizens Bank Fields at Progin Park, in Lancaster, Mass. Big crowds, dreams and expectations filled the air Friday as the final pieces to the national finals were put into place.

Under-14 Girls

Local favorites, the Scorpions SC (Mass.) took a 1-0 lead over Mustang Blast (Calif.-N) in the 24th minute thanks to a Courtney Maguire goal. In the second half, Mustang's Stephanie Amack hit the equalizer. The 1-1 tie held through the end of regulation, placing the Blast in the championship final against CASL Spartans Elite of North Carolina.

Under-14 Girls Eclipse Select 94-95 of Illinois and 94 CASL Spartans Elite both applied pressure throughout the match. Out of 10 CASL shots, only one by Morgan Reid in the 58th minute made it past the Eclipse keeper but the strike was enough to provide the CASL win. The North Carolina victory sends them in the championship match where they will play for the Under-14 Girls Elmer Ehlers Cup against the Blast.

Under-15 Boys 2009 National League Champions, Baltimore Casa Mia Bays 94 (Md.) have taken one step closer to the "the double" by earning a spot in Saturday's championship final with a 1-0 win over SCSA 93 Gold. It was the Bay's Michael Gamble in the 9th minute with the goal.

After today's matches three teams (Grand Rapids, Sereno and Spirit) were tied with two wins and loss, each seeking advancement. Both Spirit United Celtics (E-PA) and Sereno White (AZ) looked to join the Bays in the final and as the intensity heightened, the game looked destined for a scoreless tie until Spirit's Chad Craig netted a 68th minute shot (1-0). Despite the Spirit win, tie breakers placed Sereno in the finals where they will face National League champions, Baltimore Bays.

A win wasn't enough for the Grand Rapids Crew (Mich.), who defeated Blast FC (Ohio-S) 2-1, after tie breakers. The Blast went up by one early in the second half with a Joshua Saunders goal in the 47th minute. Near the end of the match the Crew applied pressure finishing two goals for the win. In the 75th minute, Taylor Mazurek scored and five minutes later Caleb Postlewait hit the game winner.

Under-16 Girls

Florida's Ponte Vedra Storm advances to the finals after a 2-0 win over the defending 2008 National Champions, the Dallas Texans 93 Red (N-Texas). The Storm's Tyler Law scored her first goal of the week in the 30th minute. Late in the second half, Allison Brashear scored her second goal of the week in the 73rd minute. Ponte Vedra Storm advance to face California North's De Anza in the final.

California North's De Anza Force Under-16 Girls' positive result today, a 2-2 tie with Eastern New York's Syosset Rough Riders, advanced the Force into the finals. Syosset took a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Kari Quinn and Liana Cornacchio in the 46th and 71st minutes respectfully. De Anza was up to the challenge as in the 73rd and 77th minutes, Taylor Comeau and Emily Kirk each found the back of the net for the tie. De Anza Force will play Ponte Vedra Storm in the finals.

Ohio North's Cleveland FC and So Cal Blues-Dodge battled in today's match. The game remained scoreless until the 78th minute when Lauren Bohaboy broke the stalemate with a So Cal goal. Two minutes later, Bohaboy tallied her second goal for the So Cal 2-0 win. The win wasn't enough for the 2009 National League and Region IV Champions to advance to the finals.

Under-17 Boys

Stephen Newman found the back of the net for YMS Xplosion (E-Pa.) in the 35th minute for a 1-0 lead over CZ Elite (Calif.-S). Eder Arreola, the current leading goal scorer for the Under-17 Boys, netted the CZ equalizer in the 67th minute and hit the insurance goal (2-1) in the 83rd minute to earn CZ Elite a place in the championship match to play for the Don Greer Cup.

Playing for advancement, Triangle United (N.C.) was looking for a positive result as they faced Kentucky's Javanon in the final day of round robin. Javanon held off Triangle's attempts, but McAmos Paye finally stuck one in the 70th for the 1-0 lead. Triangle held control of the game to move into the championship match where they face California South's CZ Elite.

2009 National League Champions, Under-17 Boys Lower Merion Velez (E-Pa.), scored in the 16th minute off a strike from Voltaire Escalona thanks to an assist from Evan Seltzer to take a 1-0 lead against National League finalist, Dallas Texans-Houston (S-Texas). The Texans tied Lower Merion 1-1 with a Marlos Escobar goal in the 62nd minute. Neither team was able to regain the lead, leaving the game knotted at 1-1 and both teams out of the championship match.

Under-18 Girls

Going into Friday's game, the Under-18 Girls FC Bucks Vipers of Eastern Pennsylvania and Ohio Elite from Ohio North had a preview of what's to come in tomorrow's championship match. Both teams qualified for advancement after their second games. Meredith Snow's 45th minute goal put Ohio up 1-0. The Bucks retaliated in the 47th minute with a Kaitlyn Kerr goal. Then, Ohio once again pulled into the 2-1 lead with an Emily Cardell goal in the 53rd minute. FC Buck's Erin Galen hit the equalizer in the 72nd minute for the 2-2 final.

Pleasanton Rage from California-North and ESC 91 Black (Okla.) faced off in the other Under-18 Girls match. Despite being on the outside looking in on advancing, both teams played a very competitive match. Pleasanton Rage won their first game of the week thanks to a late Olivia Klei goal in the 83rd minute for the 1-0 win.

Under-18 Boys

Vinicius Paiva of Kentucky's Javanon took the early lead over DSC 90 Green of (S.C.) in the 29th minute. A big roar came from the crowd on Juan Velasquez's equalizer for DSC in the 55th minute. Again in the 62nd minute, Velasquez scored for DSC's 2-1 advantage. Javanon's Jacob Kemper tied it, 2-2, in the 67th minute. Crayton Benson captured DSC's lead in the 75th minute. Completing his hat trick, Juan Velasquez brought the score to 4-2 in the 89th minute. Both DSC and Javanon advance to Sunday's final.

East Fishkill Thunder (E-NY) earned the 1-0 lead over WSM Internationals (OR) in the 11th minute. WSM hit the equalizer in the 23rd minute off a Dillon Tufty goal. Sammy Giron gave Fishkill the 2-1 advantage with a 40th minute goal, only to have WSM's Erik Hurtado tie the match in the 64th minute. East Fishkill earned their first win of the championships on a Dan Scott's 67th minute strike for the 3-2 win.
