O-lineman Ward holds off on decision

It appeared Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) offensive lineman Chris Ward was on the verge of making a commitment when we last checked in on him two weeks ago. The lineman has now decided to hold off committing before his season opener this Friday.

Just two weeks ago, after visiting his two finalists, Cal and UCLA, Ward appeared to set to make his commitment. He said his decision could come, "any day now," but that no longer appears to be the case.

"I still want to talk this over with my coach," Ward said. "I really haven't sat down and done that yet so I definitely won't be making any decisions this week. We have our first game this weekend and that's where my focus is right now.

"To be honest, I feel like I still have a lot to think about. This is such a big decision and I don't want to rush in to anything. These are both great schools and I know I can't go wrong with either but I want to be 100 percent certain of my choice before I commit anywhere."

Here's what I know about Ward's recruitment. After his visit to UCLA three weeks ago, he was close to committing to UCLA while still on campus. He then took a visit to Cal Aug. 15 and came home with the Bears on top of his list.

When I talked to him Aug. 19, he was leaning back to UCLA and sounded like he could possibly commit later that week. Now the two schools look close to dead even one more time and all bets are off where Ward could end up.

Vainuku close on visits

Eureka (Calif.) two-way standout Soma Vainuku hasn't scheduled any of his official visits yet but said he does know the five schools he wants to check out.

Vainuku plays both linebacker and fullback at the high school level. He's a big kid at 6-1, 250 pounds, and plays with a mean streak.

"Right now, my five schools are Washington, Hawaii, Oregon State, UCLA and USC," Vainuku said. "Everyone has offered me except USC and UCLA. Most of the schools like me more for linebacker but USC likes me at fullback.

"I'm close to setting up my visits and will be doing that real soon here. I definitely want to take all five of my trips before I make my decision and I don't really have a leader among my five right now."
